hi!
I’m Ana - the owner and operator of Mira Wines. From 2015, I have run this vineyard with my husband Kiros by my side. He lived his dream and worked the land here for over 10 years, but unfortunately, we tragically lost him to pancreatic cancer in April 2024.
He was a tremendous loss to our family and the wine community here in the Hunter Valley, but I am determined to carry on his legacy.
what is your ‘mira’ ?
The name Mira Wines stems from Greek mythology.
The Ancient Greeks believed your “Mira” (your fate) was determined at birth by the Three Fates that hovered over the baby's head when they were born. One spun the thread of life, one measured the thread and one cut the thread, when it was their time to leave the land of the living.
Kiros and I both believed it was our path to own our vines and share our passion for quality produce, nourishing food, wine and hospitality with others.
Our logo depicts an urn, which pays homage to our Greek heritage and the first storage vessels for wine and olive oil, thousands of years ago. The cotton reel and scissors represent the story of MIRA and The Three Fates.
We believe that wine, like life, is to be shared and enjoyed.
origins
Our journey started over 25 years ago when we started making wine in our garage.
Our son stomping on grapes in a pressed steel bathtub and Kiros with his dad, Papou Kosma running the crush line year after year.
Having a long family tradition of grape growers back in Greece on the Island of Kefalonia, there were grapes in our heritage and winemaking in our blood. Grape vines covered our backyards growing up in Sydney’s East, and pruning was something you learnt as a kid.
But, there were many hit and miss vintages, depending on what grapes arrived at Sydney's Flemington Markets each year and Kiros wanted more control over the produce and to change our lifestyle.
Traditions and techniques have been passed down through the generations and now we have had the privilege of owning our own slice of paradise in the heart of the Hunter Valley.
from coast to country
So, we made the big move from Sydney’s coastal suburbs and to Hunter Valley Wine country. We wanted to be hands on, to know and grow the fruit that would become our wine.
We are among a group of small family vineyard owners and winemakers, with an immense passion for our vines and our wines . Properties like ours typically produce 1000-4000 bottles each year. That is just 120-260 cases each vintage .
The vineyard was singularly hand pruned and cared for by the two of us with backup from family, friends and the Hunter community. All Vineyard work and care of the fruit is our responsibility. We hand over the best fruit possible to our winemaker Dan Binet each year.
our vines, our wines
The majority of the vines on our property were planted in the 1990s, comprising of Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon varieties - perfect for our boutique wine collection.
The Muscat vines on "The Hill" were planted nearly over 70 years ago and are amongst the oldest in the Hunter Valley. They are precious to us, having such longstanding history on the property. They produce magnificent fruit, perfect for our sparkling Moscato, or left on the vine to dry and be enjoyed on a cheese platter.
The previous owners called the Muscat vines "the old girls" and we do too.
Prior to Kiros’ passing, he planted his own vines - “you can’t say you have a vineyard if you haven’t planted your own grapes.” Our Pinot Grigio vines were established by Kiros in September 2023.
"If it smells good and it tastes good .... then the wine has done its job"

meet our wine guy, Dan
Whilst Kiros and I dabbled in winemaking on an ameteur level, to produce volume, particularly now with Kiros passing, we have entrusted our fruit to a great Hunter Valley Winemaker - Daniel Binet.
Dan has secured himself as one of the Hunter Valley's most respected winemakers having over 20 years’ experience. He is well known in the Hunter for his ability to de-mistify winemaking and convey wine information in a natural and engaging way.
His passionate streak is evident in everything he does at Domaine de Binet and Binet Family Wines.
He had a similar ethos to Kiros when it comes to wine - Dan always told us good fruit makes good wine and you have to start with the basics.
when life gives you lemons…
